There were 46 corn silage samples tested between the Extension and Charapata Seed sampling events on Tuesday, Sept. 16. The overall average of the samples was approximately 69%, with a wide range of 52.8% to 74%. The vast majority of samples were in the range of 68 to 73% test result, with the expectation that in-field moisture would be about 1.5% higher than the test results.

The range in tested results indicates the importance of having good information before you start chopping. The drier results were from the southern, northern, and western edges of the three county area, with a big swath of the center area still having 70% plus moisture corn. The warmth and quickly drying soils are leading to faster declines in moisture per day than are normally expected, but having test data is well worth it this year, so please make sure you test your own fields or work with agronomists, nutritionists, or bring samples to the last two Wednesday samplings (site schedule below).
