Beef Management Pasture Walk & Workshop Announced

(Crivitz) Multiple aspects of properly managing beef in a rotational grazing management system will be featured as part of the discussions at a Pasture Walk & Workshop being held on Tuesday, October 7.  The event is being hosted by Kingbird Cattle in the Town of Beaver, located at N4207 Alpine Lane.  The event is collaboratively sponsored by Kingbird Cattle, Crivitz Feed Mill, and UW-Madison, Division of Extension.

Kingbird Cattle owner Greg Lewandowski will share his passion for grass management as he leads the in-pasture portion of the event.  Discussion will focus on managing grass-fed beef for today’s market; fall forage management considerations; and forage selection.  Extension Beef Outreach Specialist Bill Halfman will review body condition scoring and how it impacts cattle management and showcase Kingbird’s equipment as part of a truck & trailer preparation/safety discussion.  Regional Crops/Soils Extension Educator Scott Reuss will be assisting with the forages topics and reviewing weed impacts, identification, and management.

At the conclusion of the pasture walk portion, the program will continue just down the road at the Beaver Town hall with supper, provided by Kingbird Cattle and the Crivitz Feed Mill.  Halfman will lead discussion on heifer selection, focusing on traits and phenotypes that are best suited for particular management systems.  The program will conclude with a review of breeding and bull selection pointers and any other animal or forage management topics and questions as brought up by attendees.

All are welcome to attend this free event, which starts at 4:30 p.m. at the farm, with supper and further discussion taking place at the Beaver Town Hall (W8405 Cty Hwy P).  Supper is graciously sponsored by Kingbird Cattle and the Crivitz Feed Mill.  Registration is requested to ensure accurate meal counts by contacting Scott Reuss via email to scott.reuss@wisc.edu or call/text to 715-701-0966.  You can also contact Reuss with any questions about the event or any other agricultural topics.  The Marinette, Oconto, Shawano, and Langlade offices of Univ. of WI-Madison, Div. of Extension are co-sponsoring and supporting this event.
