(Lena) Corn producers and agronomists are invited to attend a field day being held Tuesday, Oct. 13 at a pair of research and demonstration plots in the Town of Little River. Sulfur rate research plots in corn for grain are the featured aspect of the day, with cover crop mixes the focus of a demonstration plot also at the event location. The plots are located at the intersection of Larmey Lane and Townline Road in the Town of Little River (Use N1096 Townline Road, Lena, WI for mapping). Discussion will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude prior to noon. Featured will be the sulfur rate response research trial hosted by Behnke Grain Farm. Sulfur’s importance within a nutrient management plan has increased in recent years as sulfur deposition has decreased and crop yields have increased, leading to a higher incidence of sulfur based yield and quality losses in area crops. The interaction of sulfur and nitrogen in crop performance is a major factor and will be part of the discussion, as well.
Also to be viewed during the event are cover crop demonstration plots featuring nitrogen-fixing vs non-nitrogen-fixing broadleaf species as the feature in cover crop mixes planted after winter wheat. Cover crops are a key tool in reducing soil erosion potential; improving soil health metrics; and potentially improving nutrient cycling. Discussion on how to achieve the most return to cover crop investments will be focused upon, along with species selection, establishment method options, and any other topics brought up by attendees.
Signage helping direct parking. Discussion will be led by UW-Madison, Division of Extension Crops & Soils Educators Scott Reuss and Chris Clark. The field day is free for all to attend, and Certified Crop Advisor Continuing Education Credits have been applied for this event.
